Teachers!!!

I dont know about the rest of you, but I'm am getting so frustrated by all the news lately about the Education system in this country.  As a parent, it's probably the most relevant news issue to me, and it's making me want to jump on my soapbox, so here I go.

Lately there has been items about poor performance of our students, bullying, children committing suicide due to school incidents, the list goes on ... and on top of all this the teachers asking for a payrise!!!  Umm, sorry, but am I the only one that sees the irony here?

I have read the blogs associated with these various news stories, and it seems to be a war between teachers and parents - teachers saying they cant handle the poorly parented kids (isnt that just part of the challenge of their job?); and parents expecting to be sending their children to school (and it is NOT free education!!) to learn, to get a good education, be protected and safe, and prepared for their life in the future.  Thats possibly a big call, and it used to be taken on by serious, dedicated and respectable professionals.

I went to State school and Private school, and the teachers at both commanded respect, and from the majority of students they got it.  From the ones that they didnt get it, thestudents suffered and learnt the consequences - not by the teachers just not bothering because it was all too hard and just blaming the parents, but by controlled measures like detention, losing some privileges such as sports or excursions or the like, or simple yard duty during play times; you know the things I mean, the old fashion 'punishments' ... do the wrong thing and you lose out on the fun times.  With kids, especially the younger ones (where the impressions are first made), it works.  Sure, that meant that some teacher had to give up some of their free time too, but it was all part of the job!  It was just another facet of 'teaching'.

Not all children are 'blessed' with the stereotypical perfect parents, but that's not the kids' fault!  And that is what the profession of being a teacher is supposed to be primarily concerned with.  Isnt it?

Today I read yet another shocking story of things that go on in schools, and the schools and Education Dept's very poor handling of the situation.  And then we have to read the cop out statements made by the Dept, the policitians, and then as you read through the blog attached, the teachers trying to justify themselves by yet again blaming the parents.  The parents dont go to the school with the kids!!!!  That's the teachers time to be responsible for the kids, so how the hell do they figure its the parents fault?  So, after biting my tongue for ages because I knew I'd probably never stop once I started, I sent the following reply.

"It seems to be a culture to protect offenders and make victims suffer" ... never a truer statement uttered!  That does seem to be the culture, not just for sexual abuse matters but also for violence and bullying.  Time for the Education Dept to GET REAL and have a good hard look at the people they are employing in what used to be a respected 'profession', and not just a 'job' that seems to be taken up by a lot of people who are more interested in as much 'money for nothing' as they can get.  Teachers never seem to stop blaming parents for their own lack of ability to gain respect and admiration from their students, and some type of control over the environment they provide for them.  From my experience, and my oldest is about to enter his final year of secondary schooling so I've just about been through the whole process, the ratio of decent and dedicated professionals in this once admirable position to those in it for the 'easy money' is very lop-sided, particularly in primary school.  There has always been disfunctional families in society, but it used to be dedicated teachers who took their job very seriously, almost as a calling, and gave the balance and guidance to all their students to go on and become the adults of the future.  It is their duty, including duty of care, and they are all too busy burying their heads and protecting themselves rather than dealing with childhood issues that occur, and have always been happening.  Sorry teachers, but its your 'job' 9-3, 5 days a week, 40 odd weeks a year.  So do your job and earn your (already) good money, and stop all the disgraceful news about the poor eduction system in this country that seems to be becoming a daily news item -  inbetween you trying to convince us you're worthy of a pay rise!

Knowing that it will probably be edited if published (because it was a bit long for a blog reply), I figured I may as well post it in here as well, just to make me feel like I'd actually 'had my say'.  I bet theres plenty of parents out their feeling the same, so feel free to vent in reply to it here too.  It kinda makes you feel a bit better, lol.

February 06

Wow ... been a while

Wow, it's been so long since I did a blog that I'd nearly forgotten how!  But anyway, I worked it out ... I'm such a friggen genious :P

I hope everyone has been living thriving and surviving ... I certainly have.  My life is insane sometimes, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

** hint hint ... would love anyone that actually bothers to read this to reply to it and tell me how you've been going and what u've been up to

Anyway, I'm now the mother of TWO teenagers, heaven help me ... Jade has started high school and Ben is driving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (.. a car, not just me insane lol)

I'm now working in a pub ... and I LOVE it!!!  Not surprising I guess, but I wish I'd done it a long time ago, instead of creating the worlds longest CV, lol.  I am office manager, so still doing admin but in a whole different scope ... its never boring and always something new going on, and its just awesome being part of the operations of a place I'm all too familiar with.  Born a pub girl methinks.

I've been working 2 jobs, still work in the Real Estate office as well, but with footy season fast approaching, I'm wondering just how to get 78 hours per day!  I was elected Vice President at my footy club, which is such an honour to me and I can't wait to get right into it; I'm also still doing the Junior Registrar position which is already busy as hell as always pre-season.  Something somewhere has got to give.  A friend told me today that I should cut back on the voluntary work before giving up paid work, which I guess is a reasonable point, but when I'm earning quite enough thru one of the jobs, and my work at the footy club is something I love and get so much satisfaction from, I just figure that life is too short to do without the things you enjoy most.  So ... paid to work in a pub ... total satisfaction thru voluntary work at the footy club .... pub/footy ... I dont see anything wrong with that picture at all!!!  But we'll see ... I enjoy the other job too, so maybe I will work something out.

My ever amazing car is still running ... altho the poor things creaks and groans quite a lot these days ... but she still starts everytime and gets me where I wanna go.  Getting close to the time that I will get another one tho, and I cant wait to get a decent one now that I can afford it.

I'm having a holiday in Qld with the kids in May ... doing the full Gold Coast touristy thing.  Been a while since I've done that becos I have family that live up there and I've been up there so often that I dont remember the last time I enjoyed it for the holiday destination that it is.  So, we're getting the flashy kickass beachfront apartment, hiring the car, doing all the theme parks .... and of course will slip in a game at the Gabba while we're there.  Can't wait!!!  Sun, surf, fun, relaxing ... all the things a chill out holiday should be.

Well, I really cant think of much more to say right now.  Keep smilin, keep drinkin :P, keep lovin life ... and of course ;) make of it what u will!!!

Find Madeleine

THIS IS A NEW PHOTO OF MADELEINE
PLEASE READ AND FORWARD TO EVERYONE YOU CAN THINK OF

THERE IS A DISTINCT MARK IN HER EYE THAT MAY HELP FIND HER

Madeleine McCann's family believe a new picture of the missing four-year-old could play a vital role in the search for her.
The photo of the youngster shows clearly the her distinctive right eye, where the pupil runs into the blue-green iris.

It is this distinguishing mark that will identify Madeleine to those on the lookout for her, according to aunt and uncle John and Diane McCann.

The Glasgow couple aim to distribute the appeal poster, which features the Crimestoppers telephone number, as far afield as they can.

Family friend Andrew Renwick told Sky News that support for the search had been "overwhelming" and her family were extremely grateful.

Mrs McCann said: "The purpose of the poster is to highlight the distinction in Madeleine's eye.

"We want to make the most of it, because we know her hair could potentially be cut or dyed."

Mr McCann added: "The poster was designed by a friend of the family and I've begun Emailing it to acquaintances in different parts of the world.

"I'm asking people to circulate it the best they can and make it be seen."

Madeleine's Eye Holds Vital Clue

May 23

mad moments, proud moments ... never dull

What a night!

Earlier, I had a fight with my daughter ... she wants to play in a school rugby league carnival, however last year she played in this event and finished the day with a back injury that saw her out of her regular sports for 6-7 weeks.  Sports is her 'thing', and now she is concentrating on her tennis, which she is applying to get into the Specialist Sports programme at High School next year, and she is also about to try out for the second year in SAPSASA Soccer, which she got into last year AND was chosen to try out for the State Squad.

My opinion is, why be involved in a one day event, in a sport that she does not regularly play and is not looking to be involved in as a regular sport, with the high chance of being injured again (none of the kids are particularly skilled, which makes accidents more prone to happen, especially with kids going in as hard as she does!) ... and if she was to aggravate the injury again she could possibly spoil her chances of making it into both the SAPSASA Soccer, and more importantly the Specialist Sports Tennis programme.

She doesnt see it that way!  Her final year of primary school is an all important event to her and her peers.  She loves sport, and wants to be involved in as much as she can be.  She's 12 ... the bigger picture isnt always a high priority.

But, especially after watching the NRL State of Origin tonight, played by professionals who know what theyre doing (supposedly lol), my mind is made up that this is a game that can be dangerous, particularly if players don't really know how to play safely and properly. The majority of the kids playing in the entire carnival have only had one training session.  It's not necessarily whether she knows how to play properly, or if she tries not to go in so hard ... its a high contact game, and hard contact ... and if not done correctly has the potential to result in big damage.

So ... my resolution ... will ask the teachers running things if she can participate in a non playing capacity, team manager or coach assistant ... another side of any sport that cant hurt kids to learn about.  See how I go, but we agreed that it would be an amicable solution.

On a proud note ... my son is in Canberra on a school trip this week.  They have a fantastic itinerary planned, very full on, and well worth the money spent on it.  Their first stop after touching down was to the War Memorial, where they were being met by a veteran and laying a wreath.  Ben was selected to deliver a thank you speech to the veteran, and had to write his speech on the plane on the way there.  He rang me tonight and I asked how it went ... he told me that the veteran had thanked him afterwards, and told him that his speech been very moving. How cool is that!  Well done Ben!!!  You have a gift for this, public speaking is a fantastic skill to have ... and I know you well enough to know it would have been written and delivered in an honest and heartfelt manner.  Awesome :D

Other than that, I am nearly 40, I have a new job, Im back at TAFE learning something new again, Mum is recovering ... so all is pretty good in Gems world.

Ciao for now

P.S.   To a wonderful friend, my love and heart to you and your Mum in a difficult time.  I am here for you in whichever capacity you may need at any time ... and I hope for every minute to be something special in the times to come - I pray for them to be as many as possible, comfortable, and beautiful for you both. (F)

Anzac Day 2007

LEST WE FORGET

Anzac Day is here again!  An extra proud one for me tomorrow, as my son and my Dad are both marching in the Anzac Day Parade, my son because he is now in the Australian AirForce Cadets, and they will be bearing banners and flags for the various regiments, and also marching in the Cadets Flight; and my Dad is marching on behalf of his father for the first time, after wanting to and talking about doing it for as long as I can remember, spurred on by Ben being in it this year.

I'm an extremely proud mother and daughter!!!

Then of course, in the afternoon .... THE BIG GAME!!!!!!! .... Collingwood vs Essendon at The G.  GO PIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

A few thoughts for Anzac Day ...

ANZAC DAY is 25 April - God bless our Servicemen and women

The Final Inspection

THE
FINAL INSPECTION

The Soldier stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The Soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, my Lord, I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a dollar,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Racism?

I received my daily email from seek.com this morning, and found the following job advertised:-

"...
MENTOR FOR INDIGENOUS PROGRAM

Are you
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?
Available to start immediately?
Experienced in the child care or training industry?  (Not essential, but advantageous)
CMC Training at Work would love to hear from you!
CMC Training at Work seek to employ an Indigenous Australian who can provide mentoring support to participants, host employers, staff and our project coordinator for our child care employment and training program.
The mentor will be required to be available to participants during work hours, provide flexible support including confidential discussions, provide advice and counseling  about life and career, help to solve problems, assist the Project Coordinator.
20 hours per week, office is in city location, $42,000 per annum (pro-rata for part time) plus mobile phone and fuel allowance.  Contract until 8th Aug 2008.  Must have current police check or be willing to apply, hold a current drivers license and have own private transport.

..."

Now, I am not racist or bigoted or prejudiced myself, however I do find this job ad to be!!!!  I'd be very interested to see the reaction if a job was advertised starting with ... "Are you   Caucasian ...."   All hell would break lose!

I can understand it being PREFERABLE to have someone of indigenous background for this position, however that does not mean that someone NOT of indigenous descent could have enough skill, understanding of culture, training, qualifications etc to do this job just as effectively!!

Anyway, just found it very interesting that this is even legal.  You can't discriminate about age, marital status, sexual preference, race or creed in job ads (was my understanding), but doesnt this ad do just that!!!

End of rant

JUST A MOM?

A woman, renewing her driver's  license at the County Clerk's office
was asked by the  woman recorder to state her occupation.

She hesitated,  uncertain how to classify herself.
"What I mean is," explained  the recorder, "do you have a job or are you just a......?"

"Of  course I have a job," snapped the woman.

"I'm a Mom."

"We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'housewife' covers it,"

said the recorder  emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I  found myself in the

same situation,  this time at our own Town Hall.
The Clerk was obviously a career  woman, poised,

efficient and  possessed of a high sounding title like,
"Official Interrogator" or  "Town Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she  probed.

What made me say it?
I do not know.
The words simply popped out.
"I'm a Research Associate in the field  of Child Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused,  ball-point pen frozen in midair and
looked up as though she had not  heard right.

I repeated the title slowly  emphasizing the most significant words.
Then I stared with wonder as my  pronouncement was written,
in bold, black ink on the official  questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest,
"just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any  trace of fluster in my voice,
I heard myself reply,
"I have a  continuing program of research,
[what mother doesn't)
in the  laboratory and in the field,
(normally I would have said indoors and  out).
I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the  whole family)
and already have four credits (all daughters).
Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities,

(any mother care  to disagree?)
and I often work 14 hours a d a y, (24 is more like it).
But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers  and the rewards are

more of a  satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing  note of respect in the clerk's voice as she
completed the form, stood up  and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway,  buoyed up by my glamorous new career,
I was greeted by my lab assistants  -- ages 13, 7, and 3.
Upstairs I could hear our new experimental  model,
(a 6 month old baby) in the child development program,
testing out a new vocal pattern.
I felt I had scored a beat  on bureaucracy!
And I had gone on the official records as someone  more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than
"just another Mom."   Motherhood!

What a glorious career!
Especially when there's a title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers
"Senior Research  associates in the field of
Child Development and Human Relations"
and great grandmothers
"Executive Senior Research Associates"?
I think so!!!
I also think it makes Aunts
"Associate Research Assistants".

Please  send this to another Mom, Grandmother, Aunt, and other friends you know.

May your troubles be less, your blessings be more and nothing  but happiness come through your door!

RIP Billy Thorpe

AUSTRALIAN rock legend Billy Thorpe has died this morning after suffering a major heart attack overnight.

Thorpe, 60, died in the early hours of the morning after he was rushed to Sydney's St Vincent's Public Hospital at 2am (AEDT), a spokesman has said.

He is survived by his wife Lynne, and daughters Rusty and Lauren.  "His family were with him when he passed away," the spokesman has said on Channel 9.

Thorpe's manager Michael Chugg has said the death is a "terrible tragedy", as Thorpe had just finished recording a new album and was very happy after a recent acoustic tour.

Ambulance crews were called to Thorpe's Sydney home shortly after midnight after the star began suffering chest pains.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition but then went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

"He woke at 1am feeling terrible. Shortly after that he had a massive heart attack, the paramedics were called to the house, they worked very hard in hospital," Mr Chugg said on Channel Nine.

Thorpe's former manager Michael Browning, who also handled AC/DC, has said Thorpe was a "genius".

"I don't think there has ever been anyone in Australia that has been able to work the crowd like Billy Thorpe.  He was just amazing, an actual genius as a showman."

Rock historian Glenn A. Baker has said Thorpe and his band the Aztecs created Australia's pub music scene.

"It's the one form of music we've done better and more convincingly than any other.  This sort of loud, roaring, howling, ferocious, sort of pub-based bluesy rock and roll and Thorpe was that incredibly powerful voice.

"There was something that was just primal about Thorpe's blood-curdling roar."

Former Midnight Oil frontman and now Labor MP Peter Garrett has said Thorpe was an inspiration to a generation of musicians.

"They were loud and proud and very Aussie and when they played at Sunbury (music festival) they got up as a bunch of Aussie blokes and just really did it full frontal."

Fellow rocker Normie Rowe has said Thorpe was a "cornerstone" of the local music industry.

Career

Thorpe was born in England but migrated with his family to Brisbane in the 1950s.

He moved to Sydney in 1963 and recorded his first song the next year with his band Billy and the Aztecs.

They went on to perform at sell-out venues across Australia and had a string of hits in the 60s and 70s.

Thorpe was best known for the track Most People I Know (Think That I'm Crazy), released in 1972, which reached No.3 on the national charts.

His music career has spanned five decades and he has also written two autobiographies.

Poking fun at the length of his career, Thorpe released a boxed set in the 1990s titled Lock Up Your Mothers.

He was inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association hall of fame in 1991.

R.I.P.

Lots going on

Wow ... my life is an adventure day after day lately!!!!

Online ... I've created new MSN Comm http://groups.msn.com/AussieSportsComm/ ... which is, of course, all about Aussie Sports!!!

Tipping comps abound in there, and AFL & NRL 2007 Tips are open to join.  (Just go to AFL or NRL messageboards to find instructions if ur interested in being part of it ... the more the merrier!!!)

I've been developing my own site, but it's not online just yet... working on it, stay tuned lol.

I have ended an era of my life online so far ... Aussie Alternative has all but closed down.  Originally Adelaide Alternative (until some fuktard decided it would be amusing to hack and close it), it then became Aussie Alternative ... but some things just run their course, and with it being used once again as a slagging board, I decided enuff was enuff.  I was contemplating closing it anyway, but that kinda sealed its fate.  Onwards to new beginnings tho!!!

In the rest of my life:-

After 9 1/2 years of singledom I now have the bestest b/f in the world!!! (good things come to those that wait ;) )

I was asked to join the Committee at my local Footy Club, and now have also found myself as Junior registrar (which is not quite the menial task I thought it was at first, lol), so all things footy abound again ... my b/f moaned he's a footy widow, rofl

I have left yet another job :S ... the company cut opening hours, which in turn cut one staff member, and I basically volunteered to be it.  I was looking around for something else anyway, and out of all the staff I am probably in the best position to be able to pick up and start again from it ... so onto the next career move in my life ... theres been a few lol.

So many other things going on ... but sometimes u just gotta pick whats worthy of blog entry lol.

In other words, I'm over writing for today ... hahaha

AFL starts tomorrow!!!!!!! ... well NAB Cup anyways ... but at this stage its way good enuff for a fix ... BRING IT ON :D

Sex Benefits

1. Sex is a beauty treatment. Scientific tests find that when women make
love they produce amounts of the hormone estrogen, which makes hair shi
ne and skin smooth.

=============

2. Gentle, relaxed lovemaking reduces your chances of suffering
dermatitis, skin rashes and bl emishes. The sweat produced cleanses the
pores and makes your skin glow.

=============

3. Lovemaking can burn up those calories you piled on during that
romantic dinner.

=============

4. Sex is one of the safest sports you can take up. It stretches and
tones up just about every muscle in the body. It's more enjoyable than
swimming 20 laps, and you don't need special sneakers !

=============

5. Sex is an instant cure for mild depression. It releases endorphins
into the bloodstream, producing a sense of euphoria and leaving you with
a feeling of well-being.

=============

6. The more sex you have, the more you will be offered. The sexually
active body gives off greater quantities of chemicals called pheromones.
These subtle sex perfumes drive the opposite sex crazy!

===========! ==

7 . Sex is the safest tranquilizer in the world. IT IS 10 TIMES MORE
EFFECTIVE THAN VALIUM.

=============

8. Kissing each day will keep the dentist away. Kissing encourages
saliva to wash food from the teeth and lowers the level of the acid that
causes decay, preventing plaque build-up.

=============

9. Sex actually relieves headaches. A lovemaking session can release the
tension that restricts blood vessels in the brain.

=============

10. A lot of lovemaking can unblock a stuffy nose. Sex is a natural
antihistamine. It can help combat asthma and hay fever.

Happy Birthday Ben

Today is my beloved first-born's birthday.  He's 15 ... OMG!!!

As always on this life changing day for me, I woke up unprompted at just after 6am ... the same time I went into labour with him all those years ago.  Happens every year, quite bizarre really, lol.

I have got him 2 tickets to the Clipsal 500 this year, seeing as he gets shitty with me every other year for going myself lol.  I'm pretty sure he'll be rapt with that.  Found the coolest card to go with it ... when you open it up it makes the sound of a racing car lmao.

My kids' birthdays always feel like a special day for me too, and I seem to relive every moment of the day of their birth (except the pain thank god, lol).  Especially this one, cos it lasted the whole day!!!  He won't be 'officially' 15 until 4.23 this arvo, so it's a long day of memories ahead.  Better go prepare for the onslaught of teenagers here later.  I have my bouncers lined up ready, lol.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my taller-than-me-now, 'baby boy', Ben ... MWAHHHHH

Kids went off to their dad's on xmas arvo, I worked the Wed and Thu and then started 13 days holiday.  3 days to go now :(  Caught up with some friends, had a few pub sessions, had a couple of relaxing days (which did nothing but make me bored lol), and then it was New Years Eve before I knew it.  Had a great night with great company and great music - had a comp to pick title and artist in a huge array of songs which was won hands down by a 14yo!!!!  Pretty impressive!  I think I knew about 2 hahaha.  First song heard for 2007 was Riders on The Storm, pretty awesome way to start off for me, being my fav fav song!

Day b4 NYE planned an impromptu holiday, originally for 3 days, on NYE it became 2 days, NYD trip was cancelled cos of weather, next morning we left intending on 2 days only, 3 days later got back home ... lol.  Confusion reigns.  EXPERIENCED Eyre Peninsula by driving a complete lap in 40C+ heat, with no aircon in car.  No indulgent luxuries here!!!  I achieved 4/5 of a long standing fantasy ... the fantasy - camping out in the Nullabor under a full moon ... achievement - 4/5 of the way there, night b4 the complete full moon.  Definately not a disappointment though, drove west from Ceduna to a secluded spot, had dinner on the bonnet of the car, then when the sun had completely disappeared was enveloped by the glow of an amazing and powerful huge moon!  It was incredible, and certainly an awesome start to a new year.

Will do a blog on the whole trip another time, short story is 2196kms in 2.5 days - quite a trip!  Achieved what was wanted, got outa town!!!!

Had 2 more days of kid free time, ending in great night out at movie (Borat - very funny!!!) and then a madmouse trip through the Adelaide Hills in the rain.  I normally love driving, but that freaked me out a little, lol.  Was a great night, and ended a week spent with a very special person - and if you're reading this - THANK YOU!!!

Kids are home now, and life feels normal again.  It's wonderful having a bit of 'free time' to do and be just me, but at the end of the day, they are the reason for my existence ... and even though Im sure chaos will occur anytime soon, it's awesome to have them home.

I'll be 40 this year, and they say 'life begins' ... theres some things that have started this year that I hope are a 'beginning' already, and I hope to find a new job that will also be a beginning to a new career.  The rest I will take as it comes!

Off to cook a big welcome home breakfast for the kids now ... Happy New Year to all ... MAKE OF IT WHAT YOU WILL!!! ;)

Dear Santa ...

Dear Santa,

I've been a good mom all year.

I've fed, cleaned and cuddled my children on demand,
visited the doctor's office more than my doctor,
sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground.

I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases,
since I had to write this letter with my son's red crayon,
on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles,
and who knows when I'll find anymore free time in the next 18 years.

Here are my Christmas wishes:

I'd like a pair of legs that don't ache
(in any color, except purple, which I already have)
and arms that don't hurt or flap in the breeze;
but are strong enough to pull my screaming child out of the candy aisle in the grocery store.
I'd also like a waist,
since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy.

If you're hauling big ticket items this year
I'd like fingerprint resistant windows
and a radio that only plays adult music;
a television that doesn't broadcast any programs containing talking animals;
and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side,
I could use a talking doll that says, "Yes, Mommy" to boost my parental confidence,
along with two kids who don't fight
and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools.
I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks
chanting "Don't eat in the living room" and "Take your hands off your brother,"
because my voice seems to be just out of my children's hearing range and can only be heard by the dog.

If it's too late to find any of these products, I'd settle for
enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning,
or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you don't mind,
I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season.
Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely.
It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house
without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door.
I think he wants his crayon back.
Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the door
and comein and dry off so you don't catch cold.
Help yourself to cookies on the table but don't eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

Yours Always, MOM...!

P.S. One more thing...you can cancel all my requests if you can keep my children young enough to believe in Santa.

(***Santa has asked that this gets passed on to all the mommies you know)
